With your child, mark off a small patch of grass or earth. Use an item, like a large bowl turned upside down, to press a circle into the ground. Or cut a piece of string about three feet in length and lay it in a circle.
Now look closely at the ground inside your circle and see how many different things you can find. Include everything: natural objects, people-made items, living and nonliving things. Invite your child to record what you find by drawing the items or making marks on paper.
If your child enjoys this activity, try it again another time in a different kind of spot, maybe in sand or even on pavement. Compare the number and kinds of things you found in the two different locations.
