Materials
- art supplies (pencils, crayons, markers, water colors, paints)
- printer paper and/or construction paper
- scissors
- glue, paste, and tape
- balls of blue yarn, blue wrapping paper, and/or blue cellophane wrap
- for water globes: clear bottles, sequins, glitter, paperclips, small buttons, and food coloring
Boat-making supplies
- Styrofoam trays, plastic plates, pieces of Styrofoam
- plastic cups, containers, and bottles
- straws, craft sticks
- aluminum foil, cut into six-inch squares
- clay
- masking tape and scissors
(You may want to set up boat-making supplies near the Water Table/Boat Center so children can easily test their boats.)
Directions
This week children continue experimenting with things that sink and float.
- Encourage them to draw pictures of things that float or sink.
- Invite them to make water globes: adding sequins, glitter, food coloring, and other materials to clear water bottles with caps. As they turn the bottles over, have them notice how some thing drift slowly down through the water while others bob to the surface.
Later in the week they’ll explore boats—have them draw pictures of different kinds of boats.
