- A tree is a very large plant. There are many different types of trees.
Directions
Before you read: Show children the cover, and read the title and author’s name. Ask, What do you think the boy is holding in his hand? What do you predict that seed will grow into?
While you read: Point out the illustration of the boy using the magnifying glass and ask, What’s the boy doing with the magnifying glass? Have you used a magnifying glass like this? What did it help you do?
After you read: Ask children what the seed needed to grow. (sun and rain) Turn the pages and have children name each of the seasons pictured. Ask them what happens to the tree during the summer, fall, winter, and spring. Ask, What season is it now? What do you notice about trees outside (bare branches, budding leaves, lots of green leaves, colored fall leaves?).
Turn to the first pages and ask children what they think the boy is wishing for. Then turn to the last page and ask them if they think his wish came true. Ask, Do you think it took a long time for the tree to grow from a seed into a tree? Why do you think that?
